YOUTH EVENT
THE FUTURE OF YOUTH POLICY
IN EUROPE AT STAKE
Young people speak out prior to the 8th European Conference of Youth Ministers,
8-9 October, Kiev
Why is gender equality not yet a reality in Europe? What could leaders from across Europe do to better fight all forms of discrimination? What needs to be done to ensure full respect for the rights of all young Europeans? What kind of support do young refugees, asylum-seekers and displaced persons need from their receiving societies?
Young representatives from across Europe will be addressing these very issues in Kiev on 8-9 October, as they gather to prepare their contribution to the 8th European Conference of Youth Ministers taking place on 10-11 October. The latter is an event held every three years to set out the new long term priorities for the youth sector of the Council of Europe.
The Youth Event is organised by the European Youth Forum (YFJ) and the Ukrainian Youth Forum (UYF), with the support of the Council of Europe. Youth Event participants will come up with a set of proposals to implement, at the national level, the strategy that the Ministers responsible for Youth from 49 countries will adopt to establish the priorities of the youth sector for the next decade, the so called "Agenda 2020".
"The promise made by European leaders to ensure equal opportunities for all is still far from being a reality. Thus, this event is a great chance for young people to make their voice heard on those matters that affect them directly, and try to find more suitable solutions," notes Bettina Schwarzmayr, President of the European Youth Forum.
The speakers at the opening session include Mr. Yuriy Pavlenko, Ukrainian Minister for Youth, Family and Sports; Mr Ralf-Rene Weingartner, Director for Youth and Sports at the Council of Europe; Ms Bettina Schwarzmayr, President of the European Youth Forum and Yuriy Kryvoruchko, Chairman of the Ukrainian Youth Forum. Ms Marianne Satrapi, graphic novelist and author of the award-winning film Perspepolis, and Ms Laurence Eberhard-Harribey, expert on youth issues and professor and holder of Ethic Management and Sustainable Development at Bordeaux Ecole de Management, have been invited to take part in the event.
The Ukrainian Youth Forum, together with local volunteers, will be holding a public event on the final day of the Ministerial Conference on 11 October in Kiev to raise awareness among the general public on the influence that the new priorities of the youth sector in Europe will have on their lives in the upcoming ten years.
